Ancestors of modern dolphins passed to life in water more than 70 million years ago. During this time cetaceans adapted to constant stay in water that is why their appearance became perfectly unlike to usual ground mammals and they are more likely big fishes. Such change was accompanied by deep reconstruction of an organism.
Dolphins are as ones of class of mammals, warm-blooded animals as man is. They are not fishes.
Data about embryonic development of cetaceans’ thoracic fins show its’ big resembleness with early stages of development of forelegs (phalanges of fingers) of ground mammals.
Lengthening of jaws – rostrum – was initiated by hydrodynamic demands; displacement of nose foramen to sinciput is to fast inhalation-expiration; a cranium became more massive because of big density of a medium. One of the special features of cetaceans’ brain is staggering development of a cortex. It is characterized by rich and complicated drawing of fissures and convolutions of the brain which are borders of physiological parts of a cortex. Fissures can be the 1st order and the 2nd order that are deeper. The complicated drawing of fissures testify to cetaceans are high-organized animals.
A brain of a new-born dolphin can be compared with one of a new-born child. It develops more quickly than child’s one.
It was claimed that one of the dolphin’s hemispheres is sleeping while the other is awake. It occurs more than an hour, after that dolphin awakes, and than it is vise versa. Two halves of the brain are in different states. Such an interchange occurs several times during the night up to the dolphin have a good sleep. Both halves of the brain never sleep simultaneously, its are “on duty” one after another. No one animal has demonstrated such things yet.
Dolphins orient perfectly in surrounding in full absence of visibility thanks to their sound locator (sonar) which is able to send and to get waves. A dolphin utters special sounds in water that spreads in front of a dolphin and could meet some obstacles to reverberate from its. Reverberated sound spreads back and could be heard by a dolphin as echo.
Abilities of dolphin’s locator are great. With its help a dolphin may find out the subjects which are taking place on distance 1 km, but may consider as if its are close.
The reflected wave also is perceived by the bottom jaw - by teeth. Distance between teeth practically identical along all jaw. It makes approximately length of a wave in sea water and on the greatest frequency is used by dolphins. Teeth play a role of the television aerial.
